The online “StrikePlagiarism.com” plagiarism detecting service was presented at EIU, and the ways of cooperation with the company that created the system were discussed.
Eurasia International University significantly strengthens the respect and observance of the norms of academic integrity in the scientific and educational environment. The governing bodies of the university have adopted various documents which provide appropriate provisions to ensure academic integrity and prevent plagiarism. At the same time, the university actively implements various methodological support measures to promote a culture of academic integrity. In this context, it is also noteworthy to mention the “Guidebook for Scientific Integrity” developed by EIU and other partner universities within the framework of the EU co-funded Erasmus+ “Reforming Doctoral Education in Armenia in Line with Needs of Academia, Industry and Current EU Practices (ARMDOCT)” Project, as well as various thematic training courses regularly organized by the university.
Nevertheless, modern technological solutions play an important role in the effective detection and prevention of plagiarism in the academic environment. Using IT tools, university staff can now quickly and carefully review the text of submitted theses, research papers, and scientific articles to identify passages re-written or borrowed from other sources without providing appropriate references (potential manifestations of plagiarism). The use of such technological solutions not only simplifies the process of identifying plagiarism, but also ensures the originality of academic papers submitted by students and researchers, and contributes to the formation of a culture of academic integrity and originality in the university environment.
The university hosted the representative of the company established in Poland in 2002, known under the “StrikePlagiarism.com” brand and providing services to 1500 universities, colleges, schools, and publishing houses in more than 30 countries to develop anti-plagiarism policy implementation measures and improve existing technical tools used at EIU. Mrs. Julia Kalczun, Business Development Director Central Asia, presented in detail the functional instruments of the “StrikePlagiarism.com” service. The system can detect similarities with Armenian texts available on the Internet and accumulated databases, as well as cases written in other languages and later translated into Armenian.
The participants of the meeting, Ruben Markosyan, EIU Vice-Rector, Lia Tevosyan Head of the EIU Research Center and Nune Jomardyan Secretary of the Editorial Board of the scientific periodical “EIU Bulletin” and other EIU staff members observed the work of the system in practice, and meantime presented questions related to some features of working with Armenian materials to the representative of the company. The mutual understanding to develop the cooperation has been achieved and shortly various units of EIU will test the anti-system in a pilot mode.
